DRONE CLUB

It started as one kid with a broken quad and a soldering iron. It ended up as the Globe Drone Leadership Alliance — a youth alliance that runs its own workshops, flies a float down a Chinatown parade, and now fields a team that competes internationally. Three jobs got it there.

COMPETE

Everything the club built was rehearsal for this. In April 2026 a team from Greater Vancouver flew to San Diego for the REC Foundation's West Aerial Drone Championship — Canada's first entry in the series — and came home with medals. Then they came home and went back to work.

GOLD Team Canada's haul from the championship — in a first year of competing at all.

SILVER Second-place finishes in the autonomous-flight and teamwork missions.

TEAM Vancouver Integem 2, the high-school squad — and the number the alliance now flies under.

Alliance launch. The Globe Drone Leadership Alliance went public, and I spoke as its youth representative — the first time the thing we had been building in a workshop had a name and a room full of people.

2025.12.06
Western Canada qualifier. The first Aerial Drone Competition event ever held in Canada — twenty teams in the atrium of City Square, and the moment the club stopped being a club and became a team. Three squads from the programme went up that weekend: 1368A, 1368B and 1368E.

Chinatown Spring Festival parade. The alliance's own float, a drone formation over it, and a walking robot dog — the same machines, in front of the whole city.

West Aerial Drone Championship. Two days at Balboa Park against nearly a hundred teams from four countries, on a season game called Time Warp — and a Teamwork Mission championship banner coming back across the border.

Recognition dinner. The school district presented the team with honour certificates at UBC, with BC MLA Teresa Wat, school trustee Christopher Richardson, Alfred Chien, coach James Tang and AIGEM's Amanda Liang in the room. The whole squad was called up — both brackets, not just the winners.

The season did not end with a trophy on a table. In February the same crew put a float in the city's New Year parade — drones in formation overhead, a Unitree robot dog walking the route underneath, and the mayor stopping at the table. The alliance is housed at the Chinese Cultural Centre, so the parade went past our own front door. Then we handed the Centre a cheque for $8,000, back into the building that hosts us. That is the part I am proudest of.

LEADERSHIP

MOVE YOUR CURSOR — THE FIELD BENDS AROUND YOU. MAKING SPACE IS ALSO THE JOB.

▸ FOUNDER & CAPTAIN — FPV DRONE CLUB

ACTION: Recruited, trained, and organized a 15-member team across build, race, and media crews; ran weekly sessions and a parts budget.
IMPACT: Three years of continuous operation, and a pipeline that now runs when I am not in the room.

▸ CHIEF PLANNER — GLOBE DRONE LEADERSHIP ALLIANCE

ACTION: Planned the alliance's public programme — a New Year parade float with a drone formation and a walking robot dog, community workshops, and the donation back to the cultural centre that hosted us.
IMPACT: Opened the team to the city: a seat at the mayor's table, and a younger intake of pilots who came in through the workshops.
